REFLECTING ON MY YEAR

APPRAISAL

At the beginning of the year I was excited to create new work on a professional level, build my skill set as a photographer and person. I have learnt various skills in the studio in regards to equipment and lighting. I’m a massive networking fan and I began creating contacts during my studies in sixth form, but it has flourished even more while living in Leeds being around like minded creatives. I’ve been lucky enough to attend talks, events and exhibitions that have made me build connections with others but also spark inspiration. My platform on social media has grown a considerable amount from just getting my name and work out there for people to see. I speak to many graphic designers, photographers, models and musicians in general which helps for future work. A goal I had at the beginning of the academic year was to reach over 600 followers on my portfolio Instagram by the end of the first year, I managed to succeed in doing so by hitting my goal this month! My plans were to just learn and grow, adjust to my new environment and go with the flow taking each opportunity as it comes to me.

Many challenges have also come my way during the year, such as juggling a job and studies but along the way I have met some incredibly creative people with a lot of potential. Made some lifelong friends, built my portfolio, confidence but also created some bodies of work that I am extremely proud of. It’s been a year that has made me learn a lot, myself as a worker and person. During this PP1 module not only have I learnt about how simple it is to put together a blog but also the importance of attending exhibitions and occasionally showing off your work. Additionally, improved my problem solving skills during this global pandemic, using what facilities I have to create work to keep me inspired and going.

A highlight of the year for me was travelling to Budapest, not only for a small break but to see everything Photography; I took amazing photos, ate great food and saw some beautiful work. Second highlight of mine was being apart of my first public exhibition for everyone around Leeds to come and see, it was a small milestone in my creative journey! Some positivity and good skills I’ll carry through to next year is my constant networking, always being consistent on my public portfolio to gain exposure. Constantly creating! Like they say once you stop using it you lose it. I’ve been carrying a compact camera wherever I go, if I see something nice I’ll capture it; I think it’s a good thing to keep doing as it can spark ideas.

Although it’s improving I’d like to build my self confidence on my craft and projects, posting the work I’m proud of not worrying about if others will like it. My time management isn’t the worst but isn’t the best either, it could be improved which is what I’m going to do for second year. I’ve had a blast learning from people who have been in the photography scene for years, adjusting to new savvy equipment but also beginning to find my style in my work.
